Damaraland is the old apartheid name given to the region south of Kaokoland and north of the main road to Swakopmund. It is still commonly used in tourism circles, although the entire region has now been renamed. Highlights of the area include :
Prehistoric water courses with open plains and grassland, massive granite koppies and distant mountains create the Damaraland landscape. Game species include desert elephant, black rhino, ostrich and springbok. Palmwag is an oasis nestled amid red hills. The scenary is characterised by small hills and semi-desert scrub, with small bushes and stunted trees. The major attractions are the black rhino and desert elephants which often visit the area.The Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain and home to the famous "White Lady" Bushman Painting. Twyfelfontein, a wonderful rocky outcrop with thousands of Bushman engravings. Spitzkoppe, a typical pointed inselberg, and a place of great mystery. The Petrified Forest, which is millions of years old. The Vingerklip (finger rock), is a towering finger of limestone that rises 35m above its base. It is a remnant of a plateau formed over 15 million years ago
Namibia's finest community campsite is located only a few kilometres away from Twyfelfontein. Aba Huab camp is located on the banks of the dry Aba Huab River bed, this camp is situated in one Namibia's most scenic areas. Aba Huab Camp is a community based tourist camp, it was started by Save the Rhino Trust and the proceeds from the tourists go partly towards community development.
Two other community camps can be found between Palmwag and Sesfontein. Khowarib campsite is situated on the Khowarib River and has several huts built by the locals in traditional style. Ongongo Falls is one of Namibia's lesser known splendours, a small waterfall feeds a crystal clear rock pool. It is easy to spend many hours swimming and relaxing in this idilyc setting.

Aba-Huab, has basic facilities which include a bar, and basic ablution facilities. A highlight are the outdoor showers from which you can watch the stars while showering. Facilites at Khowarib and Ongongo are even more basic, and include a bush toilet and bucket showers, visitors are advised to take everything with them.

A normal 2x4 sedan vehicle is sufficient. Although the roads north of Palmwag are sometimes in a terrible state and may require the additional clearance of a bakkie or 4x4.
The average summer maximum temperature is 38C, during the cooler months these maximum temperatures are in the lower 20'sC. Winter nights can be fairly cold and occasionally reach freezing.
