Luderitz - Namibia

General

Luderitz was founded by a German trader Adolf Luderitz in 1883. In the early 1900's diamonds were discovered in the area, and a diamond rush began. Kolmanskop Ghost Town, once a booming diamond town is now a reminder of these time as the empty houses fight a constant battle against the advancing sand.
Ludeitz itself is squeezed on a rocky outcrop, between the cold Atlantic Ocean and the windy Namib Desert. Luderitz has several restaurants most of which specialise in local seafood. The pubs and bars are extremly friendly and the locals are most hospitable. Only a short drive from town is Diaz Point, where Batholomew Diaz erected a stone cross. It is also worth driving along the coastline and visiting some of the many rocky coves.
Every morning there is a schooner trip that departs from the harbour to visit some of the offshore islands, the boat is often accompanied by dolphins.
While driving between Aus and Luderitzlook out for the desert horses which live in a narrow corridore along the road. In recent months a lack of water has decimated the population, but steps have now been taken to feed the animals.
