Swakopmund - Namibia

General

Swakopmund is Namibia's favourite holiday town. It has an abundance of German style architecture, which coupled with the predominantly overcast weather gives the bizarre feeling of a German town. During the summer holidays thousands of Namibians flock to the coast to spend their holidays away from the intense heat of the interior.
In recent times the town has become an adventure sport hot spot. Sandboarding, quad-biking and carting on the dunes are all extremely popular. Other activities include parachuting, microlighting and shark fishing. These activities should be booked in advance due to the high demand during peak times.
Close to Swakopmund, the Welwithchia drive offers an excellent example of the Namib desert, on the three hour drive you will find lichen fields, the moon landscape, first world war relics as well as the amazing Welwitchia plant.

Places to stay in Swakopmund

Mile 4 Campsite, as the name implies is 4 miles (6km) north of Swakopmund. It's a windy and desolate place and is only busy during the Christmas holiday period. About 20km south of Swakopmund is the nicer Langstrand Holiday Resort. Due to the coastal fog camping is often an unpleasant experience.
The Swakopmund Municipality runs the Swakopmund Rest camp which offers accommodation in bungalows which are situated extremly close to the town centre.
The charming Frenus and Sybille (and little Rafael) run the excellent Alternative Space Backpackers in Swakopmund. This is definately one of the best places to stay in Namibia.
Swakopmund has several Bed and Breakfast, pensions and hotels for more information visit our lodging section of the Travel Shop web site.

  • Climate

The weather at the coast is often chilly due to the coastal fog. This provides a welcome relief from the heat of the interior. The Namibian coast is not a tropical paradise and sunworshippers will often be dissapointed. This lack of sun is however more than made up for in the rest of the country.
